Thermal Wind Solar Storage Demand
Illustrative. Where supply sits above the demand line at midday, something has to give: curtailment, storage charging or a flexible thermal fleet. That is the kind of question we model.

Services

Modelling support across the planning cycle

From long-term capacity decisions to day-ahead operations. Every study is built around the decision it has to support.

Adequacy

Resource adequacy and reserve margin studies

Test whether a power system can meet demand reliably, and set reserve requirements grounded in its own demand, generation mix and constraints.

Questions
Is there enough firm capacity in the coming years? How much reserve is enough? How does adequacy shift across growth and mix scenarios?
Outputs
Adequacy metrics by scenario, reserve margin recommendations, a documented assumptions record.
Planning

Least-cost capacity expansion

Screen and compare generation, storage and transmission additions over the long term with linear-programming optimisation.

Questions
Which mix of solar, wind, storage and conventional capacity meets demand at least cost? How sensitive is the plan to fuel prices, demand growth or policy targets?
Outputs
Expansion pathways, cost and capacity comparisons, sensitivity analysis.
Integration

Renewable integration and curtailment

Understand how much renewable output a grid can absorb, and what limits it.

Questions
Where and when will curtailment occur? What does it cost? Which mitigations (storage, flexibility, transmission, operating practice) are worth it?
Outputs
Curtailment estimates, their drivers, ranked mitigation options.
Storage · RTC

Storage and round-the-clock renewable studies

Model generation, storage and demand together to test hybrid and round-the-clock supply configurations.

Questions
What storage size and duration make sense? Can a portfolio meet peak obligations and renewable purchase obligations across bid scenarios?
Outputs
Configuration comparisons and supply-profile results to support tender and bid decisions.
Operations

Unit commitment and economic dispatch

Mixed-integer modelling of short-term operations, merit-order dispatch and scheduling.

Questions
How should units be committed and dispatched under operating constraints? How does the merit order change with conditions?
Outputs
Dispatch schedules, cost results, operating-constraint insights.
Forecasting

Demand forecasting

Machine-learning forecasts built from historical demand data and engineered input features.

Questions
What will demand look like over the short, medium and long term, and how uncertain is that outlook?
Outputs
Forecast series with documented features, data preparation and accuracy checks.

Approach and tools

Good modelling is mostly good process

Every study follows the same five steps, so you always know what was assumed and why.

  1. Scope

Agree the decision the study must support, the time horizon and the scenarios that matter.

  2. Data and assumptions

Collect and clean inputs, then write the assumptions down in plain language for your review.

  3. Build and calibrate

Set up the model and check it against known system behaviour before running scenarios.

  4. Scenarios and sensitivities

Run the agreed cases and test which assumptions the results depend on most.

  5. Report and handover

Deliver findings, implications and, where agreed, the model itself.

About

An independent energy modelling practice, based in Bengaluru

VidyutEdge Energy Advisory helps the people who plan, build and finance power systems make decisions with numbers they can trust. Vidyut means electricity; the edge is the clarity a well-built model gives you.

The practice draws on more than a decade of experience across power-sector consulting, renewable energy and project delivery. We are open-source first, and we work in the commercial tools clients already use when a project needs them.

Transparency

If we can't explain how a result was produced, we don't hand it over.

Reproducibility

Models, data and assumptions are organised so results can be rerun and audited.

Practicality

A model is only useful if it answers a real planning or commercial question.

Decision-ready

Results are translated into planning and commercial implications, not just charts.
